Mauritius is just as spectacular below sea levels as it is on land. The waters around the island teem with fish, and are home to manatees and dugongs, endangered, but gentle, sea mammals. The island is surrounded by 150km of coral reefs and is one of the world’s most famous diving spots. Don’t worry if you’ve never dived before, there are plenty of sites suitable for beginners, whilst experienced divers can visit wrecks and a drop off. The main dive centres are located in and around Grand Baie, Blue Bay, Flic en Flac and Belle Mare. Other ways to explore the underwater scenery include snorkelling, submarine, subscooter excursions or the incredible underwater walks.
It’s not just underwater fun you can enjoy on your holiday to Mauritius. The Mauritian waters are perfect for a whole host of other watersports; including dinghy sailing, windsurfing, and kite surfing. The resort of Tamarin on the west coast is home to the island’s surfing scene. If you want to ride the waves the conditions are best between May and October. Big game fishing is also popular in Mauritius, with most fishermen hoping to catch tuna, marlin or shark.
Golfers are well-catered for on a Mauritius holiday. There are a number of excellent courses on the island, including the 18 hole, Bernhard Langer designed course at Le Tousserok on Ile aux Cerfs. If you’ve forgotten your clubs, you can rent equipment at the course.
If walking is your thing then the Black River Mountain park is a great place to explore the island’s interior. As well as stunning scenery, you might catch a glimpse of the rare Mauritian Kestrel or Pink Pigeon.
