Experience of the Month- Surfing in Lanzarote

If one of your New Year’s resolutions this year is to get fit then we have the perfect solution for you. It involves warm sunshine year round, crystal clear waters and stunning views. Surfing is a great way to burn off those Christmas calories and is suitable for all ages and abilities. It tones your core muscles, helps with balance, improves upper and lower body strength and increases flexibility.

Lanzarote is also known as the island of eternal spring due to the year round sunshine and the fact that it rarely dips below 15C in winter. Being an island, it has long expanses of exposed coastline meaning the sea breeze creates amazing waves and has sheltered coves, creating ideal conditions for beginners. All this and only a four hour flight time from the UK, what more could you ask for?

(Oh yes, there is also a volcano to explore, great food and pretty much every sport you can think of, including some of the best paragliding in Europe!)

The Lava Flow Surf School in Puerto del Carmen is an established surf school and has instructors with over 20 years of experience riding waves around the world. They have an amazing 100% success rate with clients ranging from as young as eight all the way up to 63 returning home with a picture of themselves standing up surfing.

They provide an extremely safe environment to learn in, with an emphasis on water safety. With a number of different courses ranging from one day to five days, you will definitely be able to fit this amazing experience into your holiday. One day courses are just €25 per child and €40 per adult and run throughout the year. These prices include all equipment, surf lesson theory and practical, lunch on the beach, one-on-one coaching and fault correction, plus a photograph.

As well as conventional surfing, Lava Flow also offers Stand Up Paddle (SUP) lessons, where you can learn to paddle standing up on a surf board, which is equally great exercise and is perfect for a relaxing way to see the stunning volcanic coastline. They provide wetsuits and surfboards, and will even come and pick you up from your hotel.

For a two hour SUP course, including one-on-one tuition, theory and practical teaching, plus a photo of your success, it is only €35, and there is the opportunity to extend the course to open water paddling, wave-riding and a whole day of paddle orienteering.

With an excellent knowledge of the local area and a real passion for surfing, you will struggle to find a more enjoyable, better value activity that the whole family can get involved in.
